Spurs instead of leg

Have you noticed that if you ask someone why they wear spurs, you get one of two answers. 1) to make him go. 2) for refinement. Number two is usually given by 'knowledgable' horsepeople and sounds good. However, if you use spurs to refine a leg movement (and I'm assuming that is what is meant. After all, how can you 'refine' spurring a spur jab?) and the horse doesn't move when you use your leg, then by rights you cannot refine something you don't have. Now, I'm not saying you can't use spurs to refine the response to the leg request. Of course you can. I'm actually trying to point out that it seems to have become the norm to make the horse dead to the leg and use the spur instead of the leg.

Watch Grand Prix dressage and frequently, every step is a spur. The horse is already doing the movement, yet the spur is spur, spur, spur, spurring. I know if it was me and someone told me what to do and then jabbed me WHILE I was doing it, I wouldn't be real happy about it. Probably what those pinned ears, white eyes and swishing tails are about, eh?

Thanks. It's not that spurs are out of the realm of use, but when people say refinement, sadly they aren't talking about theirs. Generally, they're talking about making the horse do something it may or may not understand FASTER.
Frequently, when I tell a newer student to bump the horse once with their legs, they kick the horse several times. Even twice will draw my wrath if that isn't what was needed. This human tendency annoys me no end and I spend a lot of time trying to rectify it.

You're right Lauren! Those pinned ears, white eyes and swishing tails are definitely all about the spurs. I've been to many a dressage show watching "top level" riders do 1 tempe' changes with spur, spur, spur, spur til I couldn't stand it anymore! I just wanted to scream at them!
I occasionally use little nubbie spurs or my Le'spurs with the teeth on the side (they are very kind) only because my horse is BIG and I have these short little legs that have a little strength, but arthritis sometimes gets in the way and I need a little help. I prefer to use my body/legs to ride my horse and I always tell people NEVER to put on a pair of spurs unless they know how to use them!

Amen sister. I own some spurs, they really look good in my home decor hanging on the wall. That's all I have ever done with them.
